Educational Technology Graphic

Educational Technology is defined by Januszewski & Molenda 2008 as:

…the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.

While working on this graphic I realized that all of our artifacts we have been working on this semester have been our way of actually “doing” what this definition describes (I am a little slow sometimes, lol). During this course I have been introduced to several new resources that I could incorporate into my future classes.

To me Educational Technology is an ongoing, constantly revolving learning/teaching practice.The instructor needs to make sure all decisions made are ethical and follow the AECT standards provided. There are three main elements of the definition from the textbook. Creating incorporates the development of instructional materials and resources to be used by the learner. Using refers to the selection and integration of the materials and resources. Managing includes the constant planning, reflecting and modifying.

I chose to use Google slides because I like the the ability to easily share.

21st Century Learning

What is 21st Century Learning? During my research of this very topic I quickly discovered there is no concrete definition. It is set up to help teachers teach in a new and invigorating way with outcomes that will prepare students for the “real world.” The outcomes expected from a 21st Century Classroom seem to be the same across the board. According to,

Framework for 21st Century Learning was developed with input from teachers, education experts, and business leaders to define and illustrate the skills and knowledge students need to succeed in work, life and citizenship, as well as the support systems necessary for 21st century learning outcomes.

When a school system decides to implement 21st Century Education there are many methods and tools available for educators to use. One such method is the flipped classroom, which is where the teacher would prepare a short video or online lesson that -pre-teaches the lesson. The students will then watch/complete this mini tutorial before the beginning of a new lesson; thus allowing actual class time for discussions, projects, and class assignments. Class time will then allow the teacher to become more of a guide/facilitator. Another method, a teacher could implement is the project base learning or PBL. PBL can be a great method for incorporating collaboration type learning among the students, but it can also be completed individually. defines PBL,

… as a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they’re studying.

My assignment this week was to create an artifact on 21st Century Learning. There are several skill sets that are required to be reached in order to be considered 21st Century ready. How the skills are reached is up to the methods and ideologies of the educators and administrators. I have created an Inforgraphic depicting a few of these skills. TechTrends BYOD…Bring Your Own Device

This assignment had me to select a tool that was discussed in the Horizon Report and investigate it. Then, I was to create something using that tool that I could later use in my classroom.  I chose BYOD…Bring Your Own Device.

Currently, at the middle school that I have been working in the most, the administration has enacted a reading initiative for the whole school. Basically, I student needs to read a chapter book of their choice for at least 30 minutes a night. Then, when they finish the book they are allowed to be entered into a drawing for some nice prizes. The more books they read the more entries they can fill out. The drawings are held once a month with about ten winners each month.

One of the main things I have been hearing is that some of the students are having a hard time finding books that appear to be interesting to them. So that is how I came up with my lesson plan for a book commercial. Each student creates a commercial about a book they have read. The commercial needs to give more information than the book blurb, but it should not give the whole thing away. I think this would help some students choose a book they would have probably passed by.

Based on the SAMR model, this activity would be considered to be on the augmentation level. Students use their device of choice with the software of their choice. However, I think with some improvement it could easily move to the modification level. Click on the link below to see the lesson plan I created to use when I incorporate it into my classroom. I have also included the activity sheet I will hand out to the students along with the rubric I would use to grade the projects.  I pictured the incorporation into a Language Arts class, however, it can be used across the curriculum.

Annotated Bibliography

To say this assignment came easy to me would be like saying herding cats is awesome. I quickly realized that my research skills along with my writing skills have not been utilized since my undergrad days, which in ended in 2002.

In saying that, I learned so much in completing this assignment. For starters, I learned about doi’s. The Direct Object Identifiers could have came in handle while I was working on my undergraduate degree. Because I do remember finding articles and then later “something” would happen an *poof* it would no longer be found.

Something else I learned about was the 1:1 Laptop Initiatives. I didn’t realize how early it started. And when I begin this assignment I wondered how 1:1 would work with students with special needs. I know there is always negative to go with positive, but I think in the articles I read the positive was too strong to ignore.

Content Curation

The assignment this week for my Ed Tech 501 course was to research various tools used for content curation; then create my own.  Being a newbie to content curation, it took me a while to grasp what exactly I was suppose to do. However, first I needed to figure out what exactly content curation meant.

Content curation is the process of sorting through the vast amounts of content on the web and presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a specific theme. The work involves sifting, sorting, arranging, and publishing information. (

Pinterest was the only type of curation tool I was familiar with and knew how to use. However, I had never thought of it for professional purposes, only personal. During my research I wanted to gravitate back to it. But, I forced myself to try and learn something new….which is the whole point of taking this course, right?

I checked out more than three curation tools. Andfinally chose to set up accounts with Juxtapost,, Flipboard (already had an account but never used).

Juxtapost is similar to Pinterest and I really wanted to use it for my project. But I could only post pictures and not articles. Flipboard confused me.  I am not sure if my search was too broad or if I didn’t spend enough time on it.  I would type in topics and nothing would be found that lined up with what I was wanting to curate.  I finally settled on Here is a link to my list. I wanted to create something that many teachers could look at and see what is being said about the use of cellphones in the classroom.  But I mainly wanted a list of WAYS of how to incorporate cell phones. I thought this would be helpful because many, like me, came into teaching before technology was fully “incorporated” into the teaching curriculum. So, some of us are use to doing it “old school” by using videos, worksheets, etc.,to get away from textbook teaching. allows me to create a list of articles that I have found to be helpful to many teachers/educators.  They give several suggestions on how to make a student’s cell phone educational. Let’s face it, there is no point in trying to fight cell phones anymore. So as educators let embrace them and include them into our curriculum. Therefore, we can know why the students would be on them while in class.

The school I am currently working in has a huge reading initiative going on. And one of the on going questions the students is having is “what books can I read that are interesting?” I would like to create something for the students to be able to use and reference back on.  I would probably use Pinerest for this idea. Because then many of the teachers could access it and add to as well. But I am open to suggestions!



RSS Feeds

You know how you see something all the time but you just never pay attention to it? Yeah, that was me when it came to the RSS feed symbol; I would notice it on several websites I have visited but didn’t stop to check it out.

This week in my 501 class I learned that I could subscribe and receive updates to many of the websites I frequent; and NOT bog down my email! I love it! This is new to me, and I am still learning how to set it up. I already like it because I am able to view my classmates learning logs and check out what they are learning and doing. Plus, I only have to go to one page to get updated, instead of many. It’s like a one-stop-shop location…..

If I were to incorporate this into my curriculum I would help my students set it up at the beginning of the school year. Then I would use it as a daily warm-up. They could subscribe to at least one local/regional news source. Then everyday as we begin class they could check for updates and write about it in a journal, whether it be digital or not. Making sure students stay (kinda) up-to-date on current events would be worth it to me.

Digital Divide vs. Digital Inequality

At the beginning of this assignment I struggled because I did not know where or how to start. I did the reading; printed the articles Dr. Schroeder gave us links to; highlighted the things I thought were important. However, I continued to have difficulty with understanding the assignment.  Then, I finally had a friend sit me down and explain it to me.  It was like a light bulb went off and I couldn’t stop!

My presentation was created with Haiku Deck. This app was easy to use, but I prefer PowerPoint (PP) because of the customization features. I had trouble with the picture editor, nothing major, just a nuisance to me. I understand the reasoning behind my class using Haiku Deck. Inserting too much data on a PP slide is something I have witnessed many times. Nevertheless, in my opinion, PP is more user-friendly.

Since August 13th, I have been working a long-term substitute position at Cedar Ridge Middle School (CRMS). Considering my past experiences with teaching computer/technology classes, I am familiar with the digital divide/digital inequality. I just never knew there was a clinical name for what I knew!

What I have discovered while being at CRMS, is that the students have an inability to navigate the Internet. My teaching experience has been mostly high school students; so by the time they reach me this has not been an issue. Being in the middle school classroom has been an eye-opener in the fact that I have had to back track and start fresh with them. When I receive my next full-time teaching position I plan to begin the school year with basic technology skills. I have discovered I can not take ANYTHING for granted when it comes to the educating my students.
